Nipah virus outbreak claims 9 lives in India

An outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has been reported in the Indian state of Kerala.

Nine people-including a nurse treating those affected- have died so far and twenty five others have been hospitalised with Nipah-like symptoms.

Nipah was first identified during an outbreak in Malaysia more than 20 years ago and can be spread by fruit bats, pigs and through human-to-human contact.

Our India correspondent Neha Poonia reports.
