Koreas open liaison office north of border

For the first time since war divided the Korean Peninsula, North and South Korea are opening a liaison office just North of the demilitarized zone. Seoul says the office will help communication between the countries and prevent the return of military threats.

South Korean officials say the office will be open 24-seven from Friday.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to open the office when they met in April.

Seoul says the communication channel will help improve inter-Korean relations, ease military tensions and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula.

The opening of the office had been delayed over Washington's concerns an office would violate sanctions against North Korea.

But the mood appears to have changed ahead of Moon and Kim's third summit next week. The White House also says it's preparing for a second summit between Kim and Trump.
