Meanwhile leading politicians from across East Africa are reacting to the news that Mugabe's reign is over. It has lead to an outpouring of relief and calls for further change across the continent. Dan Ashby sent this from Tanzania.

The Government in Tanzania has remained quiet on the issue of Zimbabwe, 

but now we've had the first hint of relief from a minister here. 

January Makamba, the Environment Secretary,  simply tweeted

"It's the end of an error, Zimbabwe" - a clever play on words, 

signalling that he at least, may be relieved to see the back of Robert Mugabe. 

Opposition politicians though have been far more outspoken. 

Zitto Kabwe from ACT Wazalendo, said it was a lesson to leaders across Africa,

and Presidents Museveni and Kabila should take heed

He also said change must be for the many and not Mugabe's cabal. 

Finally, Zambia's main opposition leader Hakainder Hichilema,

said congratulations - democracy must now rise and shine.
