The commander in chief of armed forces in Zimbabwe is denying that he's launched a coup against 93 year-old President Robert Mugabe.
But he says he's acted to defend the country's revolution against forces within Mr. Mugabe's governing ZANU-PF party that have been purging their political opponents.
General Constantino Chiwenga spoke on Zimbabwean national radio after explosions were heard in the capital Harare, and the President's residence was surrounded by troops.
